One week down, fifteen more to go! I still can’t believe that I have started this next chapter in my life. Along with being a full-time grad student, I am also balancing a full-time audit internship with a local accounting firm. This is not going to be an easy task, but as long as I keep my eyes on the goal, I know I can persevere. With that being said, this is how my first week of grad school went.
I used this first week to figure out my schedule for the next few months. As a working student, I don’t have as much time to focus on my classes as I did when I was an undergrad student. My only opportunities for me to study were the weekends and the evenings. I also quickly discovered that Mondays and Wednesdays are going to be my busiest days. On those days, I have to drive from work to school to make it to my classes. These are also the days where I stock up on as much caffeine as I can to help keep me moving!
I am taking the following three classes: taxation for business corporations, advanced accounting theory, and social media and analytics. My favorite class so far is social media and analytics class because I look forward to learning how social media can be used to collect data on companies. However, I believe the hardest class for me will be taxation for business corporations because I enjoy the audit side of accounting more than the tax side. Despite this, I like the professor in that class because his teaching methods make tax more approachable and he encourages participation. Overall, I think that I will enjoy all of these classes.
Even though I am running through a busy schedule, I need to ensure that I make time for my family. On Friday after work, I went out with my family to eat pizza and celebrate not only me starting my masters degree, but also my little brother starting his first job. I’m so grateful to have their support in this journey and to give my support in their goals in return.
I will admit that I’m still nervous about going through this process, but I look forward to the obstacles that I will face, because they will help me grow into the person that I want to become. And I also look forward to continue using this blog to document this beautiful journey called grad school.
